Jean-Claude's mother?

May. 8th, 2010 | 09:03 pm
posted by: obsessivexidiot in abvh100

So, Asher, Jean-Claude, and Julianna travelled together for at least 100 years, right? And the reason Jean-Claude wasn't with them when Julianna was killed and Asher burned was because he had to go to the bedside of his dying mother, right?

... how did his mother live that long? Am I missing something?

Thanks for your input, guys. This is confusing me.

Answered: They were together for 20 years, not 100.

Title: Scarred
Spoilers: Burnt Offerings interlude
Challenge #87. Us the following 5 words: apology, embarrassment, alcohol, tea, heat.
Word Count: 200

---

"Do not blame me for Juliana's death. I cannot read tea leaves."

Asher continues to study their painting, hands clasped behind his back. The artist was accomplished to capture the glow of Asher's hair, his regal expression and the graceful lines of his face. "You came as soon as you could," he replies flatly. "Yet it would be better had you never come."

"It is better to live. Perhaps you are embarrassed-"

"You know nothing of living," Asher's voice cuts into old wounds, his presence rubs in salt and alcohol, leaves him bleeding. When Asher turns he reveals a right cheek covered in shiny ridges. Jean-Claude imagines running his thumb across Asher's jawline and lips, feeling how these marks have changed the map of his face as if searching for other scars that have ripped him inside.

"I'm sorry," Jean-Claude says. "Truly." It is a habitual reflex when he places a hand on Asher's shoulder, but the familiarity is too jarring for both of them. Asher tears away from his touch.

"Your apologies mean nothing to me," he spits and the heat of his words sear Jean-Claude more than holy water ever could.

"Killing Anita will not restore you."

"No," Asher says triumphantly. "But it will burn you."

Many thanks to sabriel_0405 for keeping it alive with her wonderful drabbles. My resolution for 2008 will try to do a better job :)

Hopefully waterfall8484 won't kill me for this but since we seem to have a hard time with the everyother week challenges - I'd like to extend them to monthly and make them a little more than a single word.

So for Challenge #87. Us the following 5 words: apology, embarrassment, alcohol, tea, heat.

Word count: 200
Characters/pairings: Asher
Challenge: #23 Time
Cross Posted to: sabriel_0405

Time did not heal all wounds. Some, given time, turned toxic. Others healed but with insurmountable scar tissue. Asher struggled to release the first and accept the second. He hadn’t realized how much he had missed Jean-Claude until he had forgiven him. The hatred that had eaten him from within had not dissipated immediately. He was wary of the friendship Jean-Claude offered freely. Wary of the desire he saw in Anita’s eyes. Still, he relished all the firsts. The first kiss, the first touch, the first taste of her blood. It was decadent, a feast for his senses. That he could no longer remember the taste of Julianna’s life force saddened him. He thought it might have made him reckless. He had almost killed Anita. Not for revenge. Not even for the pleasure. He was searching for that last drop of something that made him whole and for which he would kill to feel again. He had told Anita that the way she looked at him had healed something deep within him. She showed him that she found him beautiful with her touch and her kiss and her trust. Maybe it took the passage of time for him to believe.

Micah lay back, panting. His heart was trying to pound through his chest and his lungs were definitely not getting enough air. He didn’t care. Life didn’t get better than this. In Anita’s arms, in her body, he was home. He gave serious consideration to sending Becky a thank you note. If she hadn’t dumped him, he might never have known how good it could really be. Maybe he should have cared that was it vampire tricks. But when he looked at Anita, her fiery passion burned him alive. Burned them both to the core. How could he regret that?

It burned where it touched him, and he closed the cuff tighter around his wrist to enhance the pain. He had considered following Caleb’s lead and getting silver nipple rings but he knew Anita wouldn’t handle that well. He shivered as the fire pulsed steady in his forearm. He would never be able to convince her that the pain reminded him that he was alive in a way that pleasure never could. But she had bought him the cuff. The highest grade of silver on the market. She may not have understood but she still wanted to make him happy.

Many apologies for being away so long! My life is pretty hectic at the moment, but I finally remembered to take time off to give you all another challenge. A big thank you to lasairfhiona for being slightly more responsible than myself - I couldn't keep the community going without her! :~D

Also thanks to lasairfhiona and sabriel_0405 for answering the last challenge!

~*~

The next challenge involves dialogue, and the easiest way of doing this is to write a drabble where someone are talking. Now I know dialogue is usually supposed to include only two people, but as long as there is actual speech you can have any number of people talking. Is Anita confessing her innermost secrets to Sigmund the penguin? Are Jean-Claude and Richard trying to be civil to each other? Is the pard involved in a lively discussion? Anything is possible!

~*~

Both simple (100 words) and double (200 words) drabbles are welcome, and so are crossovers. As always, please comment with feedback, challenge ideas, and anything else you can think of. Challenge ideas are especially welcome! Also, please put any The Harlequin spoilers under an lj-cut.

The next challenge will perhaps be issued Sunday 9/12.

Asher tied his hair back. All that gold no longer covered his face so strategically. His chest was bare and his pants looked like someone had taken a decorative punch to them. His scars were laid out in all their glory.

He had been invited to a Halloween party. Just the staff of Guilty Pleasures and their friends. Since Halloween was supposed to be scary, at least here in America, he would go as himself. It didn’t get scarier than that. Still, he felt obligated to add a few finishing touches. He stared at the mirror and picked up the dark red makeup crayon. He plumped his lips and stained the corners of his mouth. A vampire well fed. He added jagged, bloody cuts on his chest. Nails raking down his skin. He smiled, showing his fangs to the mirror. What was a feeding without a little pain?

“Are you certain, mon ami?” asked Jean-Claude from the doorway. He was decked out as a French peasant. It suited him as well as his courtier clothes did. “Only you find your image fearsome. Ma petite is likely to find you irresistible.”

Asher smiled, genuinely this time. “There have been surprising benefits.”

Dreading the Night
abvh100 topic: Halloween

Anita dreaded tonight. Not only was it Halloween, which she hated anyway, but it was also a full moon and the cop in her hated it just as much. The crazies came out, using the full moon as a lame excuse to create murder and mayhem, blaming it on the vamps and weres.

Zembrowski was still acting director of the RPT and he'd called and asked her to be available, 'just in case'. When given the choice between bloody and gory murders and being in the district for all the Halloween parties she'd take the blood and gore any day.

I entered Jean-Claude’s bedroom to find the room dark except for a handful of candles.  The light danced off the black satin sheets, sparkling around the darkly robed vampire reclined against the headboard.  His white skin glowed where the candle light hit it against the dark of the room.  My own skin shone, mere feet away from the brightest candle as I let the robe slide to the floor.

Without a word I crossed the space between the door and the bed feeling Jean-Claude’s desire at the edges of my mind.  The ardeur was completely absent; it was just the two of us in the room.  The light of the candles ebbed and flowed as I walked out of the light of one into darkness before entering the light of the next.  Jean-Claude knew how to set a mood.

He lay on top of me after I climbed onto the bed and the fur lining of his robe made my nerves stand on end.  His dark hair fell around my face, blocking the candles’ light, allowing only glimpses of light against our white skin.  Then he leaned down and kissed me and the play of light and dark was forgotten.

It had been a long month.  Things had been busy at Guilty Pleasures: I had worked on two new routines each for Nathaniel and myself.  Things had also been busy at the Circus: Anita's issues with Jean-Claude and Asher’s relationship had caused strain between the two vampires and the tension was palpable when walking the old underground halls.  There had, as always, been issues between Richard and Anita, as the two never seemed to be able to remain in the same room more than 10 minutes without trying to kill each other.

However, the full moon was tonight.  Pack business had been taken care of last night.  Having no pack ties and the night off from dancing, Nathaniel and I planned to take the night out and run through the woods.  I could feel the moon pulling at the wolf as my blood pulsed through my veins.  I wanted to change, wanted to let my wolf out to run in the cool night air.  I was looking forward to tonight’s shifting more than any other for some time.

There was a soft knock on my door, followed by flowing hair and lavender eyes.

It was time to meet the moon.

Asher sat with his back against the stone wall, a thin plume of smoke rising from the cigarette in his hand. If he noticed the cold dampness emanating from the stones he didn’t mention it. He stared at the flames from the fireplace, watching them flicker but not feelings their heat.

“Do you remember when we were traveling across Italy? The glass maker?”

“In Murano, of course. He looked at Julianna only once, but he was smitten. I remember.” It was at times like these that Jean-Claude missed wine, the feel of the glass in his hand, the heady scent of the aged, fermented grapes a fine perfume to his senses. “Don’t forget Florence.”

Asher would never forget Florence. Artists seemed to have exceptionally tasty blood. “Who wanted to paint her? Now I’m sorry I refused to stay longer.”

Jean-Claude poked at the fire and the logs released a shower of fiery ash. “Spain held its own challenges,” Jean-Claude reminded him.

He was rewarded by a small smile and a near chuckle. “I didn’t think that farmer was going to let her go. Of course, I didn’t begrudge one more day. We thought we had forever to see the world.”

A/N: This was originally written for the current challenge, Travel, but I decided it fit better with an earlier one.

“Vacation?” I asked, as if I had never heard the word.

Micah just shook his head. “Yes, vacation. You, me and Nathaniel. Alone. Out of the city. The planet can revolve without us for two nights.”

“Two nights?” I squeaked.

He sighed and sat down beside me.

“There’s no flying involved, only a three-hour drive. An historic inn in an old growth forest. The room has a fireplace, a Jacuzzi and a huge bed. All meals included. We never have to venture outside.”

He made it sound appealing, particularly when his hand snaked up to the back of my neck and began massaging the tension out of it. I leaned against his palm.

“It will be fun,” he whispered. “I promise.”

Those last words sent shivers down my spine. Making love with Micah and Nathaniel had not gotten old and sleeping between them was still the best part of my night. Two days of eating, sleeping and wild sex, not necessarily in that order, suddenly sounded very appealing. But like most things in my life, I couldn’t help but pick at it.

“Jean-Claude?”

“He approved ‘Brandon’s’ weekend off and wished us happy.”

Vacation. Maybe it wasn’t such a scary word.

“Duck,” said the man behind me and blasted the creature with a flamethrower. The smell of burning flesh had us both gagging. The thing roared.

I looked at Edward. “Run!” he said. We ran, hoping the thing’s bark was worse than its bite.

“You always bring me the very best violence.” Edward said, smiling.

I wondered how much I had changed him. He said he had been easygoing before he met me but could I believe that? I knew what Chimera had done to him had but I couldn’t help picking at it. I had made him love me. Wasn’t that almost worse? Having no free will? Did it matter that it was a double-edged sword? He shared me better than anyone else did. Never suggested that maybe Nathaniel could bunk with Jason for a night, never suggested that he wanted me alone. Though he did have me alone some times. He never treated Nathaniel as lesser, where Richard always did. Micah spent almost no time pushing his position on anyone in the preternatural community and yet everyone deferred to him. Sleeping between Micah and Nathaniel was the safest place I had ever known. We weren’t tied metaphysically, not with vampire marks anyway, and yet it was probably my smoothest relationship. I was certain I was going to screw it up. But when he caressed me, ran his beast through me, trying to wring from me the last drop of pleasure, I was grateful that Micah was as secure in himself as he was.

Nathaniel bustled around the kitchen preparing breakfast, prepping dinner, though he wouldn’t be around to eat it. I watched him, bemused. He was so efficient in the kitchen; he dominated the room even when actual dominants were there. Our sexual relationship had been built on the foundations of the ardeur but not our friendship. That had come earlier. That had been built one hairbrush stroke at a time. Tentative trust on my side. I was so sure that I would fail them and he was positive that I was everything they would ever need. I still brushed his hair some nights. It relaxed me, that rhythmic stroking. Afterward, he would curl himself around me while I buried myself in his warmth. He never complained that he wasn’t my only boyfriend. Though lately he’d made it clear that he didn’t like sharing me with just anyone. That was my influence; my jealousy that women, strangers, touched him nightly, hoping for a chance for more. I knew he wouldn’t and yet what if one of those women offered him what he needed, what I wouldn’t do? He was so much more now, I had made him so much more. A double-edged sword.

He thought they might have left it too late. That he might be too late. She was soaking in a puddle of her own blood. She had called to him. It had been her choice. The attack had been swift and brutal. Bullets, silver or lead, it made no difference, not to a human and she still was that. Would still be that. He knelt by her body, saw the tears still leaking from her eyes and gently wiped them away.

Because I could not stop for Death*
He kindly stopped for me
The Carriage held but just Ourselves
And Immortality

Had she fallen on the pavement or had the impact of the bullets thrown her there? As he knelt by her side, her blood, still warm, seeped into his pants. She was alive only through his will. He ripped open his silk shirt and cut the skin above his nipple. He lifted her boneless body and pressed her lips to the wound.

“Drink, ma petite, drink,” he encouraged, and forced power upon her, giving her the strength to swallow.

He spoke the ancient words and felt it click. They were one. One heart, one soul. He didn’t experience the satisfaction he expected. She was his for eternity but only because the alternative was death. He hoped she would remember.

Since then – ‘tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses’ Heads
Were toward Eternity

Challenge# 82 Triangles

Jul. 8th, 2007 | 10:12 pm
posted by: kayki2487 in abvh100

Title: Military Men
Characters: Thomas, Padma, Gideon
Challenge: #82 Triangles
Author's Note: The beginning of one of the lesser known Triumvirates...

They had been marching over this same mud-red, hard-packed earth for days it seemed. The men in front of Thomas had long ago given up any sign of proper decorum and marched dragging their feet, coats tied around their waists, helmets dangling behind their necks. They gasped and moaned, sweat dripping into their eyes and off the ends of their noses.
Thomas alone was in full uniform, his knees still rising and falling in a concise and orderly rhythm. His eyes scanned the trees lining the path, something was watching him, he could feel it. Calling a halt Thomas instructed the men to rest, which they did gratefully, collapsing to the ground to lean against trees.
Thomas slipped through the trees on the right, beyond which he could feel the watchful eyes. Through the trees Thomas could see the dark shape of a man.
The man looked up as Thomas entered the clearing. “Welcome Captain Carswell”, the sound of the man’s voice was like an icy finger down Thomas’ spine.
Clasping his hands behind his back Thomas looked the strange man straight in the eyes, “Who are you?”
Laughing the man took a step forward hand-in-hand with another man who had entered the clearing unnoticed by Thomas. Thomas could not look away from the strange man’s eyes as he continued his slow gliding walk forward, but he could just make out the unnatural yellow eyes of the other man.
“I”, the man said stopping directly in front of Thomas, “am your new master…”
Then Captain Thomas Carswell of the British Army knew no more.

So it seems like us mods have decided to take an early summer holiday... sorry about that! Here's another challenge to tide you over for a while, and thanks for keeping the drabbles coming during the wait! :~)

Thanks to roguetailkinker and sabriel_0405 for answering both the current and earlier challengenges!

~*~

This challenge is all about triangles. Geometrically the most stable shape there is, but socially a triangle might be very unstable indeed. The Richard/Anita/Jean-Claude triumvirate springs to mind, but there are other triumvirates, and also many other triangles of people that you can play with. And of course you don't have to drabble about people. You might as well write about an occult symbol, triangle-shaped furniture, or just someone starting a game of pool...

~*~

Both simple (100 words) and double (200 words) drabbles are welcome. As always, please comment with feedback, challenge ideas, and anything else you can think of. Challenge ideas are especially welcome! Also, please put any Danse Macabre spoilers under an lj-cut.

The next challenge will hopefully be issued some time around Sunday 22/7.

Title: Knowing
Word count: 100
Characters/pairings: Damian
Challenge: Challenge #54: Ties that bind
Author's note: Yes, I slipped in an OC. I'm bad. You can beat me with wet noodles later.

From the time she was born, the pard had been delighted with the child in their midst. Only Damian had suspected it wouldn’t last. He never spoke of it to anyone, just tried to forget while the little girl cuddled trustingly against him. From the first time he looked into her little face, he had known it was better, but he dreaded it nonetheless.

Then he’d seen it in Anita’s face and known Jean-Claude’s child couldn’t stay here...

...the morning he woke to find the girl had left the pile of sleeping wereleopards and crawled into his coffin with him.

Author's note: Another series that will always hold my heart.

They were a part of humankind once. Then came the Eugenics Wars, when all who were different were persecuted without mercy, and the preternaturals had had to band together and flee Earth with their human loyalists.

Now the day she feared has come. The humans have found them.

But she looks into this human’s eyes and sees no hatred, only something she had never thought to see there.

Innocence.

He knows what they are. It just doesn’t matter to him. They all have that look: that childlike, friendly curiosity.

He steps forward, smiles. “I’m Captain Jonathan Archer. Welcome to Enterprise.”

Title: Let the games begin
Word count: 200
Characters/pairings: Jean-Claude, Asher, Requiem, London, Damian, Byron
Challenge: #81 Games People Play

The chessboards looked out of place. The stone room was devoid of decoration. The flickering glow of the candlelit sconces barely illuminated the walls. That didn’t matter to the vampires whose eyesight was as enhanced as their hearing. The sets were unique. Damian had carved his. A different wood for every piece. He was partial to the rook made from Dutch Elm. Asher’s set had been carved from Obsidian and Ivory, long before the latter had been banned. They gleamed even in the dim light. Requiem had commissioned his set of jade and onyx and the pieces balanced comfortably in his hand. Byron’s set was more recent. Lord of the Rings. He smiled just looking at the Orcs and Hobbits. London’s set was hand-painted brass depicting Camelot members. He was, after all, the Dark Knight. Jean-Claude’s set was also wood. Burnt Sheesham and Boxwood with intricate carvings. Elegant like their owner.

Jean-Claude, Asher and Requiem took their places, Damian, London and Byron sat across. Each team completed one move each before switching to their partner’s board and doing the same. Moves had to be made within 10 seconds. Barely enough time to think much less plan. The games had begun.
